Frequently asked questions
-
What is a hero's journey?
We believe that each of us has a special calling in life, and a series of trials and tests that must be faced with integrity and purpose in order to live a satisfying and fulfilled life. Our mission is to prepare your child for his or her special journey.
-
Are children grouped by grade?
We believe that children learn best when working with children younger and older than themselves rather than split up into groups based solely on age. In addition to individualized curriculum, all ages of students work together in groups.
-
Is Acton a Montessori school?
We respect and incorporate Maria Montessori’s philosophy, but we are not a Montessori school. We also use the latest interactive technologies, hands-on projects and the Socratic Method for leading discussions.
-
What resources do you have for kids with special learning needs?
We take our commitment seriously when we promise to deliver a transformative education experience for young people at Acton Academy Phoenix. Since we are a small school, we make sure that we have the resources necessary to keep this promise for each family that joins us. Currently we have had success with young people who experience ADD/ADHD, dyslexia, and some minor forms of Autism. We are not currently equipped to serve young people with other specific learning needs.

What kind of kid thrives at Acton?
Kids who love to learn, are curious, self-motivated, and respectful. Our environment is an accelerator for the independent learner who can tackle challenging questions, follow instructions, and solve problems.
-
Where does the name come from?
Lord John Emerich Edward Dahlberg Acton (1834-1902) was a Victorian scholar of Freedom who saw liberty not as a license, but as the freedom to do what was right. He was suspicious of power for the sake of power, which led to his most famous quote: "Power tends to corrupt, and absolute power corrupts absolutely." At the Acton Academy, we celebrate his defense of economic, political and religious freedom.
-
Is Acton a private or charter school?
Acton Academy Phoenix is a private school that is part of the network of over 300 Acton Academies around the world. We follow the same exact Learning Design (curriculum) and learning model that our founders helped create at the original Acton Academy campus in Austin, Texas.
-
Does Acton Academy Phoenix accept ESA funds?
Yes. But it is up to the parents or guardians of the Learner to apply directly with the State and submit their ESA funds to Acton Academy Phoenix.
-
What is the Socratic method?
The Socratic method is a form of cooperative argumentative dialogue between individuals, based on asking and answering questions to stimulate critical thinking and draw out underlying beliefs and ideas. It's a way of exploring a subject by questioning assumptions, challenging ideas, and encouraging self-reflection, rather than simply presenting information.
-
What is your calendar and daily schedule?
Acton begins at 8:30 am each day (drop-off starting at 8:15 am) and finishes at 3:30 pm.
We operate on an 10-month calendar, but our flexible program allows families to travel together during the year, without sacrificing any learning.
The school calendar is based on a series of 4-7-week project sprints called "Sessions", each with a theme – like Rockets, Robots, Medical Biology, or Detective Chemistry. Each Session is a grand adventure, culminating in a high-stakes public Exhibition for family and friends.
Six sessions, followed by 1 to 2 weeks off to refuel and for holidays, make up the school year.
-
What is the Tuition cost?
Most up to date tuition rates can be found on our tuition page.
All children who are 5 years old at the beginning of the year are eligible for a guaranteed Empowerment Scholarship Account from the Arizona Department of Education, which can be used towards the bulk of tuition expenses. There is also a scholarship option and discounts for siblings.
